Waiting for footage becomes expensive only when people, suites, or downstream milestones are blocked. Calculate that cost as blocked people × loaded hourly cost × blocked hours, then add coordination, rush work, and schedule consequences. Compare it with the complete cost and timing of faster online delivery or physical shipment—not with the bandwidth bill alone.
Separate transfer time from blocked time
A transfer can run overnight at no idle-labor cost when nobody needs the media until morning. The same transfer can be costly if an editor, assistant, producer, and booked suite are waiting. Therefore, “the upload takes ten hours” is not a business case. “The upload leaves two people blocked for six working hours” is.
Track four clocks:
- Transport time: upload, availability, download, or physical shipment.
- Handling time: preparation, copying, access setup, verification, and ingest.
- Blocked working time: hours when assigned people cannot do useful substitute work.
- Schedule delay: downstream review, mix, color, VFX, or client milestones moved by the handoff.
Only the third and fourth clocks create delay economics. Keep them distinct from elapsed time.
Use wages carefully
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a May 2024 median annual wage of $70,980 for film and video editors. That is a national wage statistic, not a fully loaded employer cost, freelance or union day rate, billable suite rate, or producer opportunity cost. May 2025 industry tables exist, so stale May 2023 hourly figures should not be reused as current.
Build the model with your own finance-approved loaded rates. If those are unavailable, label every scenario value as illustrative and do not present it as an industry benchmark.

The $40/hour figure is an example chosen for arithmetic. It is not derived from the BLS annual median and does not include a suite, benefits, overhead, or other staff.
Put footage volume beside the clock
Apple lists 4096×2160/24p ProRes 422 HQ at a target 754 Mb/s, approximately 339 decimal GB per hour. Six hours of recorded material are therefore about 2.03 TB before audio, sidecars, proxies, and backups.
At 500 Mbps, the current calculator model estimates 10 h 6 m for one network leg. At symmetrical 500 Mbps, upload plus one editor download take 20 h 13 m. These are modeled values using decimal TB and a 12% planning allowance—not measured throughput or a TeraAirlift promise.
If the upload runs after wrap and the editor starts the following day, blocked hours may be zero. If an access problem means the editor loses an eight-hour shift, the illustrative two-editor model records $640. The same bytes have different economic impact because the scheduling condition changed.
Include coordination and rework
Delay cost can also include an assistant rebuilding a package, a producer chasing status, IT diagnosing an endpoint, a color session moved, rush courier charges, or overtime later in the week. Do not hide these inside one dramatic “cost per hour” number. Give each a row, owner, rate, and observed duration.
A simple incident worksheet is:
- who was blocked and for how many working hours;
- what alternative work was available;
- who coordinated status and access;
- whether the package or transfer had to be repeated;
- which booked sessions or milestones moved;
- which incremental charges appeared because of the delay.

Compare options even-handedly
Faster internet, a managed transfer workflow, proxies-first delivery, and shipped media all solve different constraints. Proxies can unblock editorial while originals continue. Physical media can beat a weak uplink, but the physical path includes copy-on, packaging, carrier cutoff, transit, copy-off, and verification. Online delivery includes upload, recipient access, download, and verification.

Account rates, surcharges, route, service, and cutoff all matter.
Recurring deliveries often favor investment in repeatable online operations because setup and status work can be standardized. Disconnected locations and very large one-time packages can still favor drives. The decision is whether the full alternative reduces blocked cost enough to justify its own expense and risk.
